  • Until now, Angelina Jolie has been pretty low key in her post mastectomy photos, keeping the girls pretty well covered. But on a recent location scouting trip in Hawaii, Angelina took the plunge and showed off her reconstruction work in a slinky, low-cut camisole.

The 37-year old mother and human rights advocate has long loved to shock her fans and she did so earlier this year when she opted for a double preventive mastectomy after discovering she carries the BRCA1 gene, which increases her risk of breast cancer (See Make Me Heal’s story on Angelina Jolie’s mastectomy).

Angelina lost her mother and aunt to female cancers and plans to have her ovaries removed with another operation.

Many have applauded Angelina’s openness about her elective surgery and she has become something of a hero for the preventive mastectomy movement.

Women who have double mastectomy often have different ways of dealing with the their loss of breasts, from wearing silicone breast prosthesis to getting tattoos that celebrate the area.

In Angelina’s case, she opted for breast reconstruction, which allows her to wear the same sexy black tops that have become her signature look.

Angelina first came out with her story in an editorial for The New York Times. In the piece, she explains her decision to undergo mastectomy and reconstruction:

“I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer,” she wrote of her six kids with fiance Brad Pitt. “It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as she always was.”

“There have been many advances in [reconstructive surgery] in the last few years, and the results can be beautiful,” she added, noting that she did not feel like “any less of a woman” without her natural breasts. “I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity,” she explained.
Indeed Angelina, seems as happy as ever, and no worse for the wear as she smiled at fans as they wished her well on her location scout for her first post-op project, Unbroken.
