  • Is Over 50 The New Sexy?

This year’s Best Actress Nominees feature three over 50 actresses, all of whom exude sexiness, elegance and class. Helen Mirren, the favorite to win as Best Actress at the Oscars for her role in “The Queen” is poised to redefine beauty (albeit, temporarily) in the youth-obsessed Hollywood by being the unlikely over 50 winner of an award which has consistently eluded the over 50 actress demographic. The most recent Best Actress winners were all in their 20s or 30s when they won, including Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry, and Julia Roberts. Mirren, 61, is joined by two other sexy older actresses in the Best Actress category, namely Meryl Streep and Judi Dench.

Meryl Streep, Plastic SurgeryWe decided to cast our plastic surgery microscopes on these sexy actresses and see if their perennially good looks have had some assistance from the knife. The easiest of the bunch to decipher is Meryl Streep, who at 57 has been sporting a very taut neck, no jowls, flawless face that is virtually free of wrinkles, and refreshed eyes in the film Devil Wears Prada and in recent promotional events. This has led us to believe that Meryl had a face lift, neck lift, and in most likelihood an eyelid surgery. Additionally, we are quite sure that she’s done maintenance over the years via laser or chemical peels and the routine dermal injections such as Botox or Restylane. Also of note, the plumpy cheekbones appear to be a trait of that Streep has had for at least a decade, so we are not sure if she’s had cheek implants or if it’s a natural feature. What is difficult to pin down is not the fact that Meryl Streep had cosmetic surgery, which she did, but rather when it happened. A Make Me Heal poll taken with its members has 93% of the respondents saying that Streep had a face lift.

Browsing through photos of Streep through the years, we came to the conclusion that the actress has had subtle procedures done all along her career, which is why her look in ‘Devil’ did not look overly done or artificial. If anything, we think Meryl looks stunning and wish that she would go public about it and give out her surgeon’s telephone number. The photo taken in June 2006 shows that Meryl has aged well with a little help from her plastic surgeon.

Helen Mirren, Plastic SurgeryNext on deck, the sexy and saucy 61-year old Mirren actually appears to be getting better looking with age as her sophistication and beauty shines more and more in recent years. Comfortable appearing nude in movies, Mirren does not show any major tell-tale signs of plastic surgery, although her extremely taut and clean neck line being free of any sagging or evident wrinkling could suggest a subtle face lift combined with a neck lift. Some recent photos suggest that she uses Botox to smooth her wrinkles. Some of the older photos of Mirren make her out to look older compared to today, although the lack of changes in her facial structure or eye shape and the presence of the same wrinkles lead us to conclude that she may have had a subtle facelift sometime before 2001. The actress is known not to be adverse to the idea of cosmetic surgery. In the past she has commented, “I’d start at my ankles and slowly work my way up.”

Mirren’s spokesman says, “I have absolutely no idea if Helen has had any plastic surgery.

Mirren’s change of hair style has also done wonders for her, as gone is the long grey hair with the bangs in favor of an elegant, blondish short cut. Additionally, Mirren may have gotten a stylist, as her recent outfits are scintillating compared to the more conservative and older-looking outfits that she wore 5-7 years ago. A Make Me Heal poll with members resulted in 66% of respondents believing she is natural and 33% believing she has had plastic surgery.

Make Me Heal Oscar Coverage member plastic surgeon Anthony Youn told us before the Oscars that he was uncertain about whether Mirren had plastic surgery. Hollywood‘s “Queen” has created a stir around the country with her natural beauty. She appears to be one of only a handful of middle-age actresses who has had no obvious plastic surgery, does not mention plastic surgery in interviews, and carries herself along the red carpet with a classic grace and beauty which transcends the knife,” says Youn. Youn did offer a beauty tip to Mirren, “Now, would a bit of Botox and maybe a lower lid blepharoplasty make her even more beautiful? “Botox would be great to remove many of her forehead and crow’s feet wrinkles as well.” To Mirren’s credit, Youn says “But she seems to be doing just fine without it.”

Catching up with Youn during the Oscars, he seemed to have had change of heart about Mirren’s facelift saying “It is possible that she has had some laser treatments to her skin, as well as a facelift (although likely before 2001) since I agree that her neckline is darn good for someone her age. It is unusual for someone her age to have as nice of a neckline as she does (see Judy Dench) so there is a possibility that a facelift was performed sometime in the past. If it was performed, the surgeon did a very nice job in making it look realistic.”

British-based plastic surgeon Alex Karidis speculates that Mirren may have had a combination of different procedures, including an eye lift, face lift, and laser surgery. “It is possible Helen has undergone some sort of eye lift. It involves taking off excess skin above and below the eyes and often leaves patients with much brighter eyes – as Helen appears to have now. She may also have had some sort of laser surgery to make the skin around her eyes smooth.

“It is also possible that she has had a facelift – these procedures no longer leave patients looking as if they have had their skin tightly stretched and result in a much more natural appearance.”

    Judi Dench, Plastic Surgery, Eyelid

Rounding out our study of the Over 50 in the Best Actress category, Judi Dench is a great dame at 72 by any standards. Dench appears to be aging gracefully for the most part, as evidenced by the normal tapestry of facial wrinkles and crepey neck (which some nastily call a turkey neck) that characterize her age. However, the lack of sagging skin around her eyes, no hooding over the eyes, and lack of bags below her eyes suggest the strong possibility that she had a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). “Judy Dench appears to be aging gracefully, like everyone’s favorite grandmother. While her neckline and facial wrinkles match her age, her lower eyelids do not. The lack of loose skin or bags under her eyes may be a sign of a lower blepharoplasty,” says Youn. Nowadays, blepharoplasties can be performed in a way where the scars are hidden or nearly invisible to the naked eye.

With one of these ladies set to win the Oscar, it will be a triumph for beauty at any age. We congratulate Hellen Mirren, Meryl Streep, and Judi Dench for being towering acting talents with beauty to match and appreciate their role in setting new beauty standards for our society.

Meryl Streep has refused from the beginning of her career to have a nose job to ‘fix’ her deviated septum so I find it hard to believe that she’s been under the knife at any time.

Have a look at a profile view of her face – there’s absolutely no sign of scarring and the photos of her over the years have shown her to age but she ages WELL. Those amazing cheekbones have always been that high and her skin has always looked to be incredibly well cared for.

I find it quite sad that people can’t believe women over 40 can possibly look good without plastic surgery.

I’ve stood in front of Meryl Streep on multiple occasions and she has plenty of wrinkles, all over her face and neck, particularly around her eyes [where you claim she's had work?].

She’s aged incredibly well, and looks fabulous for her age. But it’s called having an amazing make-up artist for 30 years – J. Roy Helland. Have you seen Doubt? She looks completely her age because she’s got no make-up on at all.

She’s constantly given her opinion on plastic surgery, and has said that the most she’s ever had done was her c-section, and that was because it was necessary, and a capped tooth.

Meryl is beautiful, however; she definitely has had help. Still, an inspiration to us all, and I hope to look like her when I am her age!

I don’t believe for a second that Meryl Streep has had surgery. I’m also not convinced about Judi Dench. It’s a sad society that just because someone looks good for her age the assumption is that she had surgery. Isn’t it possible that they take care of themselves and have great genes?

    9. Deoxys on April 13, 2009 7:50 am

lol, Meryl DID have a surgery. She and Cher are in my eyes addicted to surgery. I don’t like this woman due to that reason.

    10. Maxii on May 14, 2009 9:35 am

So, basically, you’re calling MERYL STREEP a liar? The MERYL STREEP? GOD?

    11. Phyllis Berry on June 1, 2009 4:30 pm

Of course they all have had work done I just wish they would be honest about it!!!

UhEmm…. Meryl Streep HAS NOT had ANY type of plastic surgery. It’s making me sick to see people making such a fuss over her!!! You know, people, it IS possible for people to look good past 40, okay? She looks great! AND! Her defined cheek bones are a natural feature. Like I said, there is some natural beauty left in this world. There are people who like themselves for who they are, not what they wear, and Meryl is on of them. Not everyone likes having silicon under their skin. I know I’m speaking for Meryl Streep and I, both. So please lay off all this crap about how Meryl has had plastic surgery, okay? :)

    14. Nika on August 2, 2009 12:39 pm

Meryl and Helen both had some help, including a face lift.
It’s not a secret, everybody who works in the industry knows. Meryl’s surgeon is on speed dial with many actors and actresses.

    15. Shannon on September 9, 2009 6:31 pm

I’m sure Meryl HASN’T ever had surgery.
Just because someone is over the age of 40 and is still gorgeous doesn’t mean they’ve had surgery done!
      Meryl is a natural beauty!
If you look at pictures of her when she was 7 or 14, she’s got her amazing cheek-bones! She always has!
I love Meryl to death! She’s the most amazing woman in the world! She’s stated her opinion many times about plastic surgery… she refuses to fix her deviated septum! I mean, come on people, she’s gorgeous and looks amazing for her age, but it’s definitely without surgery!

    16. Lyssie on September 24, 2009 3:31 am

It’s just jealousy. Many people know that they can’t possibly look that good when they reach the same age as these fab ladies and so they need to find an excuse for it. The ladies mentioned have led healthy and active lifestyles and it shows.

    17. amica on September 24, 2009 6:58 pm

why do some people insist that meryl had plastic surgery? is having great genes running thru your vein a fault? she’s having a healthy lifestyle and with regards to her faces in her films, its because of having one of the great make-up artist in hollywood- J. Roy Helland. this guy has been given awards for his great artistry.

have you guys seen photos of meryl without make-up? all her lines are so visible…and even with that she still looks beautiful au naturelle…

    18. elle on October 26, 2009 3:36 pm

Women can look good over 40 and even 50 without having had anything done. OMG. Are you guys serious? I can’t afford PS and I look 35. I’m considerably older than that. No deep wrinkles, no crows feet, no saggy neck or decolletage or knees. Maybe it’s because I’m black, we tend to age better, but I’ve seen whites who look good over 40 too. Celebs even. Sandra Bullock?

    19. Dee Dee on November 7, 2009 9:41 pm

I am 59 years old, white, and look considerably younger than that. I get odd looks when I ask for senior discounts. I think that women who get plastic surgery done are a disgrace to us all. They look phoney. Besides that, they are unbelievable in their roles. I think it is time to let women grow old “gracefully” the same way we let men grow old. An old man is no more sexy than an old woman is. Old is old and it is time we accept it both in women and in men.

    20. Carol Lipton on December 11, 2009 1:04 am

I am 58 years old and most people think I’m in my early 40′s. When I was in my early 50′s, I got mistaken for late 30′s. My secret? over 35 years on a mostly macrobiotic diet, with raw juices, periodic fasting, bodywork, lots of running around & vigorous work, staying out of the sun, & avoiding sugar, caffeine, alcohol, dairy, red meat & gluten products. I have a firm jawline, virtually no lines on my face. I’ve seen many women who follow either macrobiotic or raw food diets, and periodically do detox programs, look fantastic with no plastic surgery either.

    21. Suzie Cahalane on January 31, 2010 6:18 am

omg. whoever wrote this is an idiot Meryl Streep has never and will never have plastic surgery done. she is NATURALLY beautiful i know its rare in hollywood but its true. if you have ever seen a picture of her without make up all her wrinkles are visible and btw shes had those cheekbones since she was a child! if you bothered to do any research on this women youd know shes against plastic surgery, has a great make up artist, looks after herself and of course is just naturally BEAUTIFUL.

    22. Joyce on February 16, 2010 5:02 pm

She’s probably had facial fillers and Botox. No big deal by Hollywood standards. She’s smart. She’s allowed some aging to show. But yes, there’s been a little something done.

    23. Anna on February 21, 2010 4:38 pm

Why are we talking about actors as if they are so beyond reproach. If they had plastic surgery, so be it, and if they did not, so be it. Throwing all this lauding over them as if they are not even human, but demi-gods, that is just nuts. Are you lives so meaningless you deify movie actors?

If these actresses did not have plastic surgery, all the more power to them, and their good genes, and if they did, they did in a pretty excellent manner.

    24. Josie on March 1, 2010 7:24 pm

UHM. meryl has not had any surgery. Shes soo pretty, and shes a great role model for women. she has stated that plastic surgery is not right. she has a deviated septum, i think if she was going to get any surgery done, she would probably fix that first!!

    25. liz jones on February 5, 2011 3:33 pm

If Meryl Streep has had surgery she should ask for her money back. Although very beautiful she has aged, just look at the not quite so well lit scenes from it’s complicated, real smokers vertical lines round her mouth and she even takes the piss out of having droopy eyelids in the plastic surgery scene. She doesn’t need anything doing just like Jessica Tandy who was still beautiful (without tinkering) in her 80′s.

    26. ellen on February 4, 2013 5:07 pm

I disagree when people say that Jessica Tandy was a beauty in her 80′s. If she was standing in front of you in a room you would look right through her. Sadly, everyone looks through old people. She was never a beauty even when she was young so how can she be suddenly a beauty in her 80′s? Wow! Then we all should really look forward to rotting…I’m not saying she wasn’t a cute old lady, like Ruth Gordon was a cute old lady but stop saying this is beauty. Beauty is a privilege of youth. After that, the best you can do is look healthy.

Nobody escapes. Well, unless they die young.
