  • Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan is reportedly taking nutrition supplements to help regrow hair lost to various hairstyles for her various roles.

The Daily Mail is reporting that 25-year old Carey Mulligan is taking supplements to help her regrow hair lost to hair dye and peroxide and drastic cuts for various roles.

“She would do anything to have long, natural hair again, but she can’t grow it,” said a friend.

“She’s been recommended to take the pills for six months. While her hair is slowly but surely growing back, it’s taking a long time and she doesn’t feel she will have her confidence back until she’s happy with it.”
To help her hair grow faster and lessen the damage of peroxide, Carey is said to be taking a supplement made by Keratase, which is sold in salons. Hair supplements are often protein based, because protein is what hair is made from.

Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Salzhauer says, “There are supplements that can improve hair growth such as Biotin and B-6.  Your hair is made of protein so taking protein supplements or increasing protein in your diet can help you grow healthier hair. Prenatal vitamins are packed with protein and that’s why so many pregnant women experience improved looking hair and finger nails during pregnancy.”

Makemeheal.com wishes Carey the best with her hair growing process.

The main reason for increased hair and nail growth during pregnancy is not the composition of prenatal vitamins but the hormonal changes of the body. Women who don’t take vitamins experience the same phenomenon.

Pregnancy increases hair and nail growth from hormones. However some women during and after delivery face loss of hair and nail, so prenatal vitamins is important as every women’s body is different.

My point wasn’t the necessity of prenatal vitamins, but that they are not the sole reason of increased hair and nail-growth.

I agree that every woman’s body is different. Loosing the extra hair and nail quality is normal after pregnancy hormon levels fall back to normal in the body. Prenatal vitamins though 1.) contain folic acid which is no longer recommended after the 16th week of pregnancy 2.) are not medicine quality but only supplement quality, which means not fully controlled passive ingredients. As a pharmacist I suggest pregnant women to be cautious with prenatal supplements. I find balanced diet at medicine-free pregnancy the most beneficial for both mom and the baby.
