  • After going Behind the Candelabra to play famed pianist Liberace, it seems that star Michael Douglas has more than just an appreciation for tickling the ivories, he also has a new appreciation of plastic surgery.

68-year old Michael Douglas portrayed famously flamboyant Liberace in the HBO biopic Behind the Candelabra. In addition to learning about Liberace’s sexuality, Douglas also learned to have an appreciation for plastic surgery. Apparently the famous Vegas performer not only spent a lot of time under the knife himself, but also encouraged his young lover, Scott Thorson to undergo plastic surgery as well.

Portrayed by Matt Damon in the film, the real Scott Thorson reportedly still gets plastic surgery procedures—years after his affair with Liberace ended and the performer’s passing– even stopping for a Botox injection on his way home from a stint in jail.

Apparently when asked what he would to do to improve his looks, Douglas candidly admitted to “whatever works.”

When asked if that meant plastic surgery, Douglas said, Asked if he would have cosmetic surgery, he said: “I’d contemplate it in a minute, are you kidding? Are you talking about real life? I’d contemplate it in a minute. Why not? Whatever works.”

Douglas says that he enjoyed portraying Liberace because he was a definite departure from the roles that the actor usually takes on.

“Yeah, sure. Piano, flamboyant stage performer. There was a certain style that the piece required which I hadn’t done before.

“This was a character piece and all my career I’ve played contemporary guys with an angst of one sort or another. There was a theatricality that was a joy.”

It’s not surprising that Douglas would be open to plastic surgery. Sometime after meeting his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, from whom he is currently estranged, Douglas underwent both a necklift and facelift procedure. The results were well done, as Douglas just looked refreshed and the area around his neck and chin seemed to have recovered nicely from the pull of gravity. While many actors play coy when it comes to plastic surgery, Douglas proudly showed off the bandages near his ears that are a hallmark of the procedure.

Plastic surgery is probably a regular occurrence for Douglas, as his father is famous actor Kirk Douglas, considered one of the handsomest men in Hollywood. And while Zeta-Jones is now world famous for her beauty, older photos of the actress seem to indicate that she has had her share of work in the past, including a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), nose job and most likely uses dermal injection fillers such as Botox, Restylane, or Juvederm and potential laser treatments (i.e. Fraxel, Pixel, Active Fx, CoolTouch, Affirm, etc.) and peels to maintain her clear, wrinkle-free complexion. After Zeta-Jones dropped a lot of weight from her curvy frame, it was also rumored that she may have undergone some liposuction procedures as well.

Douglas recently battled tongue cancer and so has probably seen his share of surgery for a while, although he may routinely get Botox injections.
