Joan Rivers is a comedy legend. But how funny would she be without the help of plastic surgery?
At 76, Joan has always been open about her plastic surgery, making fun of her plasticized appearance just as much as the next comedian, and doing a better job of it. In celebration of her recent roast on Comedy Central, Make Me Heal takes a look at the multitude of procedures that Joan has undergone.
Joan’s first cosmetic surgery was reportedly an eyelid lift back in 1965 when the comedian was 32.While an eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty can be done to help correct vision impairment, Joan’s first procedure was likely cosmetic and her gateway to numerous other plastic surgeries.
Even before her initial cosmetic procedure, Joan has joked about being insecure about her looks and has gone on to also have her nose thinned, facelifts, a brow lift, cheek lift, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), Botox injections, laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, and other procedures.
Joan’s ethnic background may have made her self-concsious about the size of her nose, leading her to have a rhinoplasty to help make it appear thinner and less obtrusive.
While many women have a facelift in their late 40s or 50s, Joan has had numerous facelifts, giving her a very pulled and unnatural appearance. Her eyes look like they are pulled nearly closed and also having had a browlift, to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet and sagging eyelids, helps give her eyes a very uncomfortable look.
In addition to having an overload of plastic surgery on her face, including a cheek lift and or implants, Joan has also had cosmetic procedures below the neck as well, in the form of a breast augmentation.
While Joan never shows too much cleavage for a woman of her advanced years, she is proud of her breast implants, joking about them as much as her other procedures. In the past, she reportedly had her breasts reduced after giving birth to her daughter Melissa, another fan of plastic surgery.
New York plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer says, “Joan Rivers looks great for her age. She certainly is not shy about plastic surgery and has an operated look. However, she knows how to work it.”
Unlike many celebrities, who keep their surgeries and their surgeons private, it is common knowledge that many of Joan’s cosmetic procedures were performed by Santa Monica surgeon Steven Hoefflin.
In between surgeries, Joan reportedly gets Botox and collagen injections every four months from New York City dermatologist Patricia Wexler.
While many think that Joan is addicted to plastic surgery, which certainly seems likely, Joan claims she is happy with the results of her procedures and doesn’t seem to have any intention of stopping them any time soon.
Whether she’s mocking her own looks or her own personal tragedy, Joan has a great sense of humor when it comes to herself. Make Me Heal looks forward to her new reality show, How’d You Get So Rich?
