  • The scrutiny over whether or not Renee Zellweger has changed her look with plastic surgery has led other actresses to sympathize with the pressure on women in Hollywood to look perpetually youthful. Although she has one of the biggest and longest careers in Hollywood, Julia Roberts says that she is still subject to the same comments about her looks and calls her decision not to go under the knife for a facelift “risky.”

In an interview with British You magazine, 47-year old Julia Roberts not only promotes her current gig as a face of Lancome, but also pats herself on the back for not giving in to the pressure of Hollywood and undergoing plastic surgery.

“By Hollywood standards, I guess I’ve already taken a big risk in not having had a face-lift,” says Julia.

“But I’ve told Lancome that I want to be an aging model — so they have to keep me for at least five more years until I’m over 50,” she added.

So how does Julia stay looking fresh and healthy if she isn’t using artificial means? Making good lifestyle choices, according to the actress. Including practicing yoga and “decluttering.”

“It’s about non-grasping, non-hoarding, cleaning out your closet, dusting out your mind and letting go of the things that weigh you down mentally and emotionally.”

“There’s a lightness to my life now — an airy quality of not taking things too seriously. That’s happiness,” the Oscar winner explains.

Although she has one of the most famous faces in the world and is often a top earner at the box office, Julia has often spoken out about the challenges and pressures women in the entertainment industry face. And while she is the face of Lancome and subject to airbrushing and technology that allows her to look super smooth and youthful in ads, she has often said that she doesn’t believe in using plastic surgery as a tool.

“It’s unfortunate that we live in such a panicked, dysmorphic society where women don’t even give themselves a chance to see what they’ll look like as older persons. I want to have some idea of what I’ll look like before I start cleaning the slates. I want my kids to know when I’m pissed, when I’m happy and when I’m confounded. Your face tells a story… and it shouldn’t be a story about your drive to the doctor’s office.”

Julia is adamant in her stance against plastic surgery, but has faced not only rumors of Botox in past years, but also rumors of having plastic surgery below the neck as well. After her breasts appeared bigger and fuller in her Academy Award winning appearance as Erin Brockovich, many thought that she had undergone a breast augmentation. However Julia set the record straight by saying that role’s push-up bras and her then-recent entry into motherhood were responsible for her fuller cleavage.

When it comes to plastic surgery, women in Hollywood seem to be facing a difficult decision as their appearances are criticized no matter what.
