Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas were one of the longest going Hollywood couples. Yet earlier this year, the pair announced their impending divorce after 18 years of marriage. Melanie’s first order of business appears to be covering up the tattoo of Antonio’s name that she has flaunted on her arm all these years.
After breaking the news of her split, 56-year-old Working Girl actress Melanie Griffith hit the red carpet for the Taormina Film Fest in Italy, covering up her famous arm tattoo. The tattoo features a heart surrounding Antonio’s name and it looked as though the actress used some type of cover up to conceal the name, but didn’t bother with the surrounding heart.
The coverup was temporary and probably body makeup but now Melanie looks to be seeking a more permanent solution via laser tattoo removal. After covering up the tattoo, Melanie was spotted heading into Dr. Tattoff’s, most likely to find out what laser removal of her tattoo would entail.
More recently, Melanie was once again spotted entering the tattoo removal offices and emerging with a bandage on her arm over the spot in question. Laser tattoo removal typically takes numerous sessions and is quite painful. Different factors contribute to the removal, including the age of the tattoo and the pigmentation used. Some tattoos cannot be entirely removed and instead appear to be faded, but can be more easily concealed with makeup.
Some stars opt not to have their former lovers named removed as it is more difficult and time consuming. Instead they may cover up the tattoo with another tattoo or try to transform it, as Johnny Depp famously made his Winona Ryder tribute “Winona Forever” into “Wino.”
Given the high breakup rate in Hollywood, Melanie isn’t the first star to publicly undergo tattoo removal. After her divorce from Seal, Heidi Klum removed the singer’s name from her arm. And amidst rumors of trouble in paradise, Beyonce Knowles is said to be taking steps to remove her Jay-Z tattoo from her ring finger.
Angelina Jolie had a very public and passionate marriage to actor Billy Bob Thorton but since the pair’s split, Angelina has removed Billy Bob’s name and accompanying dragon from her bicep and replaced it with her latest project: her ever expanding global family and the coordinates of their birthplaces.
When actress Eva Longoria was married to basketball star Tony Parker, she had several tributes to him tattooed on her body, from a “nine” on the back of her neck to his initials somewhere unnamed as well as “07-07-07,” the couple’s wedding date, on the inside of her wrist. After waiting for two years after the couple’s 2010 divorce, Eva has had all three of the tattoos removed.
While the end of a relationship is probably the most common reason for laser tattoo removal, some celebrities have simply decided that they have outgrown the tattoos they had done in their youth. Now that she’s a mom, Megan Fox has removed her prominent Marilyn Monroe tattoo.
