Naomi Watts covered InStyle’s latest issue on dished on this and that, including her thoughts on plastic surgery and her reaction to the hullabaloo created by Renee Zellweger’s ever changing face.
46-year old Naomi Watts stars in some of this year’s best films, including St. Vincent and Birdman. Yet despite a busy filming schedule, the Aussie looks great and completely natural.
However, given the option of going under the knife in the future, Naomi says she doesn’t rule it out, but does hope to avoid it.
On aging and plastic surgery: “It’s not easy watching yourself get older, but when I look at two women in their fifties or sixties or seventies side by side, one who’s had surgery and one who hasn’t, I think one likes themselves a lot more and one looks more dignified and graceful. And I hope I get to stay being that woman. But I would never say ‘never.’”
And because Renee Zellweger was one of the most talked about plastic surgeries of the year, the magazine also asked Naomi about her feelings regarding the public’s strong reaction to Renee’s new face:
“[The backlash] was cruel and unnecessary. I saw a picture and I thought she looked great! She looked amazing! Leave her alone! You can’t win can you? I don’t have any judgment about [plastic surgery]; whoever makes that choice, that’s fine.”
As a reminder, since her appearance at the 2014 Elle Women in Hollywood Awards on Oct. 20, Renee Zellweger has been stirring up the Internet with people weighing in on her appearance. Some feel that women in Hollywood face extra pressure to look perfect and wrinkle-free at all times, which means that they go under the knife. Then, they face pressure for looking “too plastic.”
Some thought that Renee looked different from her Jerry Maguire days simply as a result of aging and growing older. Others thought they spotted significant signs of plastic surgery, such as an eyelid lift and fillers and Botox in Renee’s cheeks and forehead.
Renee readily acknowledged the change in her appearance, but never admitted to plastic surgery, saying, “I’m living a different, happy, more fulfilling life, and I’m thrilled that perhaps it shows,” she told People. “My friends say that I look peaceful. I am healthy. For a long time I wasn’t doing such a good job with that.”
“People don’t know me [as] healthy for a while,” she added. “Perhaps I look different. Who doesn’t as they get older?! Ha. But I am different. I’m happy.”
And although Naomi hasn’t been under the knife, she is certainly friends with her share of plastic surgery stars, like Nicole Kidman, who has become as famous for her changed face as for her acting chops. Nicole and Naomi have been friends since before they found fame in Hollywood.
On her friendship with Nicole Kidman: “We really became close when I moved to America. So, yeah, we’ve known each other almost 30 years. We always pick up where we left off. There’s so much to talk about – especially because we’ve both got kids the same age. We talk about everything that normal friends do and also about work stuff sometimes.”none
