  • Brazilian plastic surgeon Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro has come forward to say that he is responsible for performing plastic surgery on Libyan leader Moammar al-Gaddhafi back in 1995.

68-year old Muammar al-Gaddafi has long been at the center of speculation that he had undergone some plastic surgery procedures that marred his appearance, and Makemeheal.com suspected a bad facelift could be the cause (See Make Me Heal’s story on Gadhafi’s plastic surgery). In an article by Stan Lehman, circulated by the Associated Press, Brazilian plastic surgeon Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro takes responsibility for the Libyan militant’s appearance, which included fat grafts and hair plugs.

“He told me that he had been in power for 25 years at that time, and that he did not want the young people of his nation to see him as an old man,” Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro recalled. “I recommended a facelift, but he refused.”

“I warned Gadhafi that the effects of the operation I performed would last for about five years, that it had an expiration date after which the skin would sag and the wrinkles would reappear,” Ribeiro said.

“He said he would call me if he needed me to come back,” and about five years ago there was such a request, but Ribeiro had a family obligation. “They never called me again,” he said.

“Gadhafi is not looking very good these days,” said Ribeiro, noting that the 68-year-old leader has appeared jowly in recent appearances, his skin puffy, loose and deeply creased. “To let potential patients know that I operated on him would be counterproductive.”

Ribeiro says that he performed the procedures using local anesthetic in a Libyan bunker.

“He insisted on local anesthesia saying he wanted to remain alert,” the doctor added. “He was a very calm patient.”

Sao Paulo-based plastic surgeon Dr. Fabio Naccache confirmed to the AP that he was part of the team and performed a hair transplant on the Libyan leader.

On his blog, OcBody plastic surgeon Dr. John Di Saia writes, “Health care privacy laws are not universal. A Brazilian plastic surgeon claims to have visited Moammar Gadhafi in a Libyan bunker in January 1995 performing minor surgery upon him. In the US, such a statement would violate health care privacy laws without a release from the patient. ”

“Gadhafi’s surgery apparently included facial fat transfer and hair plugs. Criticism regarding the Libyan leader’s plastic surgery has been frequent over the years. ”

“The surgeon states he recommended a facelift, but Gadhafi refused requiring that any surgery he have be performed under local anesthesia only. Fillers are limited in their scope and cannot provide the same results as a good facelift. Fillers can be performed under much lesser anesthesia however. ”

Although Gadhafi could clearly use a plastic surgery touch up, he probably more likely needs a lesson in ethics first.
