Blond news reporter Amy Robach was as surprised as viewers after getting a diagnosis of cancer on air during a Good Morning America segment on Breast Cancer Awareness Month back in October. What was supposed to be a reminder to encourage women to get routine mammograms ended up being a turning point for Amy.
After getting diagnosed on air, Amy left her post on the popular morning show to take time off and get treatment, including a double mastectomy and the very painful removal of lymph nodes under her arm. Amy recently made an appearance on GMA to update viewers on her treatment plan, which will include being on drug therapy for the next decade.
Amy admitted how difficult it was to make the decision to remove both of her breasts, but decided to be aggressive in her fight against breast cancer. She opted for a double mastectomy rather than just undergoing radiation treatment or a singular lumpectomy because she wanted to more sure of being there for the rest of her daughters’ lives: future graduations, weddings, etc.
While Amy is progressing well, she has not yet returned to her position at GMA and will still undergo chemotherapy because the cancer had spread to a lymph node.
Amy is the first public personality to have a public diagnosis, but she is not the first to opt for a double mastectomy. Actress Angelina Jolie opted to undergo a preventative double mastectomy earlier this year after learning she was at high risk of developing breast cancer because she carries a gene. Singer Anastacia also announced to fans that she had undergone a double mastectomy after her breast cancer returned, the latest in a lifetime of health issues. And entertainment reporter Giuliana Rancic was very open about her struggle with cancer and her eventual double mastectomy.
When she announced her decision to undergo a double mastectomy, Angelina also revealed that she planned breast reconstruction as well. Since then, the actress has been wearing much the same body conscious clothing that has become her signature style.
Angelina noted that reconstructive surgery has come a long way in recent years and that the results may not be terrible. After Heidi Montag revealed that her oversized breast implants were causing health problems, she turned to the same reconstructive plastic surgeon that Angelina had used to replace her implants with a more manageable size.
Not all women who undergo a double mastectomy opt to have breast reconstruction. It may be too expensive or women just don’t feel comfortable with the procedure. To continue to wear clothing that is made for a woman’s chest, they may use silicone breast prosthesis along with mastectomy bras. Other women may enjoy not doing either and battles with breast cancer have been known to inspire some amazing body art.
Although Amy has said that she has struggled to come with terms her diagnosis, overall her future looks good. Makemeheal.com wishes her the best.
