  • Ricki Lake, Gastric Bypass Surgery, PlasticIt seems that from the dawn of time people have always been trying to lose weight. There is nothing wrong with that. It is always right for someone to be taking care of themselves by keeping in shape and staying physically active. There are many health-related risks to obesity and so losing weight when someone is many pounds overweight is the best remedy someone can do for themselves.

By all means, Ricki Lake, who just released The Business of Being Born, is 38 and looking great in her new body, is no exception to the-losing-weight-to-stay-healthy rule. For some time, she was weighing about 250 lbs. And now as Us Weekly reports, she is 123 lbs, and a proud owner of a size 4 body.

Now people are wondering whether Ricki Lake‘s massive weight loss was achieved by gastric bypass surgery or was the weight lost naturally. Ricky Lake denies having any surgery, saying “I never considered gastric bypass surgery.” Now, that Ricki Lake has lost all the weight, it is likely that she will need — if she hasn’t already done so — to undergo plastic surgery procedures to get rid of excess sagging skin that overhangs over her body due to her massive weight loss. A likely set of procedures that she might undergo would be a tummy tuck, arm lift, breast lift, and body lift. We will have to watch for Ricki and see if she’s gone under the knife. So far, the star has not mentioned any plastic surgery being part of her beauty regimen. Interestingly, Ricki Lake has mentioned that due to her weight loss, she has been accused of having a rhinoplasty even though she has not had a nose job and simply the weight loss has changed the shape of her face and given this illusion of her having a nose job.

How exactly now did Ricki Lake lose all this weight? It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. In 1991, she was strenuously working it off, but not in the most healthful manner. She took a slightly anorexic path by not eating much and exercising a lot. She told Us Weekly: “… I went on this extreme diet. I used to faint because I wasn’t eating and I was always exercising.” Everyone can agree that not eating until the point of fainting is not a healthy way to lose some weight.

Lake sought other means, and started to turn to healthier ways of losing weight. She claims she tried many diet plans. She did the Zone, Atkins, and the Master Cleanse Fat diet. She tried the Master Cleanse for four hours. Her nanny lost 40 lbs apparently by following it and Lake was inspired. Then the winner turned out to be Fresh Dining’s 1,200-1,400 calories-a-day diet plan.

Ricki Lake started on this plan in February:

Day OneBreakfast: Pastel frittata with shiitake mushrooms, Gruyère and fresh herbs. Lunch: Chicken tandoori wrap with an apple and jicama salad.

Snack: Whole wheat toast with crunchy roasted garlic jam. Dinner: Beef stew with Sarda-rustic handmade Sardinian pasta. Dessert: Raspberry mousse.

Day TwoBreakfast: Strawberry banana pancakes and a side of cottage cheese. Lunch: Lentil and goat cheese salad. Snack: Moorish fava bean dip with crudités.

Dinner: Baked rosemary turkey breast with peach and pecan stuffing and roasted green beans. Dessert: Classic Napoleon pastry.

Day ThreeBreakfast: Flaxseed cranberry crunch granola with fresh berries and soy milk. Lunch: Mozzarella red pepper melt on whole grain bread.

Snack: Vegetable hummus with crudités. Dinner: Honey balsamic glazed salmon with lemon asparagus. Dessert: Strawberry charlotte cake.

Day FourBreakfast: Scrambled eggs with low-fat Swiss cheese and Canadian bacon. Lunch: Ahi tuna nicoise salad with ginger miso dressing. Snack: Stuffed endive with apples, Gorgonzola and toasted hazelnuts.

Dinner: Chicken breast Marsala with grilled eggplant and sautéed mushrooms. Dessert: Peneapple mousse cream with almond chiffon cake.

Fresh Dining is a food program that delivers her food every morning. And because she hates exercising at the gym, she hiked four times a week. Despite feeling bad about excess fat, she saw a positive side: “I think I have no wrinkles because I always had fat on my face. Really skinny girls age so fast.”

Perhaps one of her motivations to get thin was the fact that she has two sons, Milo, 10, and Owen, 5. Then an invitation came from the Tribeca Film Festival to realise her new documentary. She says, “I looked at the calender after the movie got into the Tribeca Film Festival. I was so excited about people seeing the film, but I also wanted to feel great in my skin when I walked down the red carpet on April 29. And I did. I started February 7. I was so committed. I just wanted people to notice me.”

Everyone loves it when the clothes they fit into are too tight to start off, but after losing weight they get too loose. Lake talks about the best thing about being thin: “For the longest time, when I was very heavy, I couldn’t cross my legs. I couldn’t physically do it. LOVE that I can cross my legs now … Even my shoe size is changing. My Jimmy Choos are too big now.” After coming out looking so good, she was offered to be on the cover of three glossies all within 48 hours.

By losing over 125 lbs in such a short period of time, some wonder if she might have had gastric bypass surgery. This is a procedure usually reserved for those who are so overweight liposuction does not help to reduce fat and excess fat cannot be reduced through natural means such as exercising. The procedure works like this: The stomach is divided and made smaller, and the small intestine is cut and rerouted to the stomach, bypassing the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. After the surgery, a liquid diet usually is followed with eating only 900 to 1,000 calories a day for three weeks.

Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure that is like a fast fix for getting rid of excess fat. Although it is possible Lake had this procedure done on her body, the diet that follows from it differs greatly in the number of calories a day from the diet she supposedly followed to get thinner.

However, she lost the weight, and it seems that she gained weight in the first place as a result of a troubling issue from her childhood. Whatever it was, it is not widespread news and not much can be found on the topic. Maybe she was self-conscious about her image to the point that she wanted to stay inside and avoid her peers taunting her about her looks. We can only speculate. She’s definitely over it now and is back on the market: “I want to have fun! I’m not looking to marry or have more children. The biological clock isn’t ticking. I have money and I don’t need someone to take care of me. I just need someone who can take care of himself. If you know someone, let me know.”

We are liking Ricki Lake’s comeback and applaud her for her hard work losing weight the natural way without surgery. Simply put, she looks great! Now the only question is whether Ricki Lake is going to need plastic surgery — if she hasn’t already done so — to get rid of sagging excess skin.
