Did Doritos Girl Ali Landry Have Plastic Surgery?

Posted on September 30th, 2009 in Celebrity Plastic Surgery by Sam Stets

She’s become nearly a household name since the chips commercials of the late 90s aired. But for many, Ali Landry will always be the Doritos girl. Make Me Heal investigates whether or not the hot model and actress has had plastic surgery.

Ali Landry, Plastic Surgery

Whether you prefer Cool Ranch or Nacho Cheese, Doritos fans can agree on one thing: Ali Landry is beautiful. Americans first became aware of now 36-year old Ali Landry when she appeared in a commercial for Frito Lay during the 1998 Super Bowl telecast. Since then, the former Miss USA 1996 has become known as “the Doritos Girl.”

The mother of one may have undergone breast augmentation to help her pop out of the small bikini tops she is best known for wearing.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Sherrell J Aston says, “Ali Laundry has a terrific body. Ali’s photographs in a bikini suggest that she has had breast implants. I do not see any indication that she has had any other procedures.”

On the other hand, Ali may also be naturally beautiful as she doesn’t have an overly plastic look and her breasts don’t have the “bolted-on” appearance favored by swimsuit models.

New York plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer says, “Ali Landry is certainly beautiful. It is unclear from the photographs whether she has had any cosmetic procedures. However, in the photos her breast look natural and I do not see any signs of surgery.”

Dr. Paul S. Nassif, a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and Rhinoplasty Specialist in Beverly Hills, Calif., said, “Ali Landry looks amazing, and it appears to be due to her own set of genes.  She surely took the natural route, and should not change a thing.”

Since the Doritos commercials went off the air, the stunning Ali has had small roles in some minor television shows and films and was very briefly married to Saved by the Bell actor Mario Lopez (See Make Me Heal’s story on Mario Lopez’s plastic surgery).

Plastic Surgery Gone Wrong: How To Avoid It

Posted on September 29th, 2009 in Liposuction, Procedures & Breakthroughs, Tummy Tuck, Abdominoplasty by Lois W. Stern

By Lois W. Stern, Editor-at-Large, Makemeheal.com

A little over a year ago I wrote an article about the tragic death of Donda West, mother of the celebrity rapper, Kanye West, following plastic surgery. In the aftermath of Kanye’s rude mishap with Taylor Swift at the VMA Awards , I thought I would revisit his mom’s tragic story.

Donda and Kanye, Plastic Surgery

Why tragic? After doing some research on her case, I concluded that a significant factor in her death was due to poor medical judgment. Well, here we go again, some more bad news following plastic surgery. But this time, due diligence may avert the supreme tragedy of another life lost.

While investigating the Donda West tragedy, I had called both the ABPS (American Board of Plastic Surgery) and the ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties) to inquire about the board certification of Donda West’s surgeon, Dr. Jan Adams. I learned two alarming facts. Dr. Jan Adams was not listed as a board certified plastic surgeon. Furthermore the only physician on record with the ABMS bearing the name Dr. Jan Thatcher Adams was board certified in Family Medicine – not plastic surgery.

Dr. Jan Adams, Plastic Surgery I concluded that if Donda West had only made those phone calls prior to selecting her surgeon, she might have selected differently. She might even be with us today.

Donda’s autopsy results yielded no physical findings (such as a heart attack or blood clot) to explain why she went into cardiac arrest. According to Barry L. Friedberg M.D., a board certified, globally recognized leader in the field of office-based anesthesia, it was unlikely that either the length or extent of West’s surgeries caused her death. “More likely, it was the manner in which the surgery was performed; i.e. under general anesthesia which does not reliably produce pre-emptive analgesia and, therefore, often necessitates postop narcotics to manage pain. If West had sleep apnea as a pre-existing condition, even average doses of narcotics could easily prove fatal,” claims Dr. Barry Friedberg.

We will never know for sure what killed Donda West. But we do know that sound medical judgment comes only with quality training followed by lots of experience putting that training to practice.

Kanye West and Donda West, Plastic Surgery

On June 13th, 2009, the Hartford Courant ran a story about Dr. Efraim Gomez-Zapata, a name currently in the news for allegedly practicing plastic surgery without proper credentials. (According to the Hartford Courant, Dr. Efraim Gomez-Zapata is credentialed as a family practice physician, but because his name is not listed with the Connecticut State Medical Board, I was unable to verify this information.). His medical license has been suspended by this same board based on charges that he violated medical standards by performing plastic surgery without appropriate qualifications or standards to protect patient safety. The allegations of the Connecticut Department of Public Health against Dr. Efraim Gomez-Zapata include administering anesthesia and performing plastic surgery on patients without the proper license or qualifications and failing to keep proper records or have the appropriate staff, equipment, office setup and hospital privileges required in case of complications. In two patient cases cited where complications did occur, one woman had a seizure after Gomez-Zapata administered a combination of painkillers, anti-anxiety medication and a local anesthesia; while a second went into respiratory arrest after Gomez-Zapata gave her a spinal anesthesia.

What simple steps can the rest of us take to avoid fates similar to those of Donda West or the unfortunate patients treated by Dr. Gomez-Zapata? I like to think of the word TEE (short for Training, Experience and Expertise) as a handy acronym to help me remember how to investigate the credentials of any prospective surgeon.

TRAINING: Know that ANY board certified physician in any field of medicine can legally perform plastic surgery and call himself a cosmetic surgeon.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Be sure you have selected a surgeon board certified
in the area that relates to your surgical needs or desires.

EXPERIENCE: You can check out the history of any prospective surgeon by calling the medical records department of the state where he practices. Visit http://www.floridamalpractice.com/linksotherstatebds.htm for the telephone number of the medical records department of the state where your surgery will take place.

I do not know how many cosmetic surgeries either Dr. Jan Adams or Dr. Efraim Gomez-Zapata has performed. But I do know that their surgical histories send up some immediate red flags. According to medical records from the state of California, in 2001 two malpractice lawsuits were filed against Adams, ending in payouts of close to half a million dollars. Prior to the Donda West tragedy, three new, unsettled medical malpractice lawsuits were pending against this same doctor. As for Dr. Gomez-Zapata’s record, we do know that one of his patients experienced seizures during surgery and a second went into respiratory arrest. These are enough red flags to alert us to quickly do an about face and walk away from either of these offices.

Another way to assess the adequacy of a surgeon’s experience is to inquire about the number of procedures of a particular type he performs each year and how long he has been performing them. Ask to speak with some of his patients and try to meet with them in person to assess the surgeon’s work.

EXPERTISE:
Ask your surgeon where he has hospital privileges and place a phone call to that hospital to inquire if he has privileges to perform the exact procedures you are considering. This step is essential, even if your surgery is to take place in an outside surgical facility. Why? The chief of plastic surgery assesses the experience and skill of the surgeon before granting him privileges for any surgical procedure. Surgeons are often granted privileges for some procedures while having privileges for others withheld, based on their experience and expertise. If a surgeon skirts this issue or tells you it isn’t necessary for him to have hospital privileges since surgery will take place in an outside
facility, turn around and walk!

Dr. Jan Adams, Plastic Surgery

It is important to learn how to separate the sound from the noise. Donda West’s surgeon, Dr. Jan Adams had appeared on numerous national TV shows, including Oprah, CNN, Entertainment Tonight, and Discovery Health, to name a few, as a plastic surgery ‘expert’. I congratulate his PR agent for doing a phenomenal job. But great hype does not a great surgeon make. Surgical expertise does not come from making TV appearances.

Statistically, cosmetic surgery procedures have a strong safety record, but you need to heed some cautions. In a study evaluating the safety of accredited office based surgical facilities, only 1 death occurred in 58,810 surgical procedures, but there is one important caveat to that study that should not be overlooked: All of these procedures were performed in office surgery facilities accredited by the AAAASF.

While in the process of writing my first book, I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Keyes, the lead surgeon of the above study. He explained that each surgical facility accredited by the AAAASF mandates that a) the doctor be board certified in the medical specialty recommended for that procedure and b) that the doctor has been granted privileges to perform those same procedures in the hospitals with which he is affiliated. Again, remember to do your homework.

Her
e are just a few of the life saving questions you should ask before engaging a surgeon

Question Mark

Do you have hospital privileges to perform the procedures I am considering? If so, where?

What you should do next: Call the hospital(s) to inquire.

What is your board certification?

What you should do next: Contact the American Board of Medical Specialties (Internet: www.abms.org/ Phone:1-847-9091) Consider surgeons with board certification in: plastic surgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, dermatology. Here is where Experience and Expertise come into play.

Is the facility where your surgery will take place an accredited facility?

What you should do next: Ask by whom? You are in good hands if accredited by the AAAASF or AAAHC for ambulatory facilities or the JCAHO for hospital facilities.

Who will administer my anesthesia?

What you should do next: Find out if this person is a board certified anesthesiologist? Understand that the training of a board certified anesthesiologist is far more comprehensive than that of a nurse anesthetist. In determining the extent of your anesthesia needs, consider the extent of your surgery, your physical condition and age.

You need to consider the risks and rewards to your surgery. Here are some additional questions to ask your surgeon:

What are the risks to my surgical procedures?

Do you consider me a good candidate for the surgeries I am requesting?

Do I have any medical condition, health habits, etc. that we need to consider?

I am ever mindful of the words of Dr. Rohrich, former president of the ASAPS and a member of their Innovative Procedures Committee: Most women spend more time selecting a pair of shoes than selecting a plastic surgeon. You can take back your shoes, but you can’t take your face or your life back.

Did Kristin Davis Get Botoxed for Sex And The City Sequel?

Posted on September 29th, 2009 in Celebrity Plastic Surgery by Carrie Zender

When the first film version of the popular television show Sex and the City came out, Make Me Heal predicted the foursome’s only brunette, Kristin Davis would follow in the footsteps of her co-stars and get Botox injections.

Kristen Davis, Plastic Surgery

Now 44 for the sequel, tabloids have reported that Kristin looks a little different than she has in the past, giving rise to speculation of Botox injections.

New York plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer says, “Kristin Davis does have smoother skin now when compared to her previous pictures - presumably due to Botox use.”

Kristin’s forehead seems much smoother, as does the space between her brows, often referred to at the 11’s. It wouldn’t surprise Make Me Heal if Kristin has gone under the needle, as we predicted this eventuality the first time around (See Make Me Heal’s story on the SATC stars plastic surgery).

Dr. Paul S. Nassif, a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and Rhinoplasty Specialist in Beverly Hills, Calif., said, “Kristin Davis looks great. Botox is a possibility, but if present it is minimal as she still shows small signs of crow’s feet. Kristin is a beautiful woman and does not need to go to any drastic measures to stay that way.”

In any case, Kristin looks great and Make Me Heal looks forward to seeing the new SATC film and the creative fashions from costume designer Patricia Field.

Jordana Brewster’s Not a Fast & Furious Fan of Plastic Surgery

Posted on September 28th, 2009 in Celebrity Plastic Surgery by Lisa Stanfield

Earlier this year, Make Me Heal was surprised to find out that not all the women on Maxim Magazine’s Hot 100 List were surgically enhanced. Plastic surgery not only reigns supreme in Hollywood, it also usually is featured on the pages of men’s magazines. But thanks to some clever alternatives, actress Jordana Brewster seems to have bucked the plastic surgery trend.

Jordana Brewster, Plastic Surgery

The 29-year old star of the Fast & the Furious film and the television show Chuck, Jordana Brewster made the top 10 list in Maxim, without any apparent plastic surgery, a rarity for both Hollywood and the men’s magazine (Read Make Me Heal’s complete story on Maxim’s Top 10 Hottest Women).

According to plastic surgeon Dr. Sherrell J Aston, “I do not believe that Jordana Brewster has undergone any plastic surgery at this time.”

Dr. Aston’s assessment is likely correct, given Jordana’s preference for wearing “chicken cutlet” bra inserts to help enhance her bust in sexy costumes, rather than having expensive invasive plastic surgery.

Jordana has been quoted as saying, “If you don’t have to go under the knife, why do it? You can buy chicken cutlets for like $50. I’ve worn those on sets in the past, and they’re lifesavers.”

While Jordana may not have had any plastic surgery below the neck, she may be using injectables or consider using injectable fillers in the future to help preserve her beauty.

Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Walden reveals, “Jordana Brewster does not appear to have had any work done as her gorgeous features are consistent with earlier photos. If anything, she may be using injectables to preserve her natural good looks.”

Look out for Jordana’s chicken cutlets when the Emmy-nominated television series Chuck returns to NBC.

Gary Busey’s Bad Plastic Surgery Coming to Theater Near You

Posted on September 28th, 2009 in Awful/Bad Plastic Surgery, Celebrity Plastic Surgery, Male Plastic Surgery by Lisa Stern

65-year old Gary Busey’s personal life has made him nearly as famous as his on-screen antics. From arrests to motorcycle accidents, Gary’s active lifestyle has taken a toll on his face that plastic surgery did very little to correct.

Gary Busey, Plastic Surgery

While some have speculated that Gary’s uneven eyes are the result of a botched facelift or eyelid surgery, Make Me Heal believes it is more likely that they are a consequence of the motorcycle accident Gary experienced.

On his blog, plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn explains:

“I understand that Gary Busey was in a terrible motorcycle accident some time ago, which caused significant brain damage and possibly also facial bone fractures. The head injury could explain his extra-friendly behavior to Jennifer Garner on the red carpet of the Oscars, and an orbit fracture can explain the asymmetry in his eyes. He may have a condition of his left eye called orbital dystopia, which occurs when the floor of the eye socket is fractured, causing the eyeball to migrate downward. It is frequently combined with enopthalmos, where the eyeball becomes sunken in due to similar factors. It can be improved via facial recontruction surgery, often using bone from his skull or a titanium plate to remake the floor of his eye socket.”

While Gary’s eyes certainly give him a jarring appearance, part of his plasticized look come from his apparent dental veneers.

Plastic surgeon Dr Sherrell J Aston says, “It does appear that Mr. Busey has had dental veneers. They may be a little bit large in some people’s judgment.”

Ocbody.com Surgeon John Di Saia MD says, “I think he had them a while ago. They seem too large. Maybe he had them redone.”

While straight, white teeth are often taken as a sign of youth, when they are too perfect they can end up looking like false teeth and actually age a person, as in the case of young Ali Lohan(See Make Me Heal’s story on Ali Lohan’s dental veneers).

New York plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer says, “It certainly looks like Gary Busey has dental veneers. Veneers can often look strange if they are too perfect.”

Dr. Paul S. Nassif, a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and Rhinoplasty Specialist in Beverly Hills, Calif., said, “It is likely that Gary Busey had veneers. Veneers can look like perfect teeth, which are evident on Gary.”

His odd looks and behavior problems aside; Gary is still a talented actor. You can see the Oscar-nominated actor next in Brian DePalma’s upcoming film Down and Distance.

Did Ellen DeGeneres Get a Facelift for American Idol?

Posted on September 25th, 2009 in Celebrity Plastic Surgery by Erica Hurtz

Actress, stand-up comedian, and Emmy Award-winning host of the syndicated talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show Ellen DeGeneres has just been announced as the new fourth judge of American Idol. Make Me Heal wonders whether the funny lady has had any more plastic surgery to tackle the task of taking on a second job.

Ellen, Plastic Surgery

51-year old Ellen DeGeneres wed her longtime girlfriend, Portia de Rossi last summer, when same-sex marriage was still legal in California. At the time, Make Me Heal reported on the couples’ possible plastic surgery refreshments, including Botox, Juvederm and laser treatments and chemical peels (See Make Me Heal’s story on Ellen DeGeneres’ and Portia de Rossi’s plastic surgeries).

As Ellen is older and more regularly in the spotlight, she may have also had more invasive plastic surgery procedures, including: a brow lift, laser peel, neck lift, and Botox. More recently, she may have also had a facelift and eyelift.

Her refreshments may have also helped her become a spokeswoman for CoverGirl cosmetics, celebrating the beauty of a variety of women.

If Ellen has had work, she likely had it over a period of time, allowing fans to grow accustomed to her appearance. Having work over time, rather than all at once helps a patient have a more natural and refreshed result. When too many procedures are done at once, it often results in a more “plasticized” looking face.

Of her new role as judge, Ellen has been quoted as saying, “I’m thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol. I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text my vote.”

Make Me Heal has long been a fan of the spunky comedian and looks forward to her commentary on the American Idol hopefuls.

Simon Cowell’s Plastic Surgery Casualty: Katrina Lee

Posted on September 25th, 2009 in Celebrity Plastic Surgery by Carrie Zender

Simon Cowell should know by now the power of his suggestion. His words have convinced countless hopefuls whether or not they can follow their dreams to become singers. But his words have also affected whether or not singing wanna-be’s undergo plastic surgery.

Katrina Lee, Plastic Surgery

Simon Cowell is best known to American audiences for his role as the cranky judge on the hit show American Idol. But in his native Britain, the hard to please judge also makes rude remark on the British version of the show, called X-Factor.

Simon is a well-known Botox fan (See Make Me Heal’s story on Simon Cowell’s Botox use) and even convinced his fellow Brit and reality show star celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay to get the wrinkle relaxing injections as well (See Make Me Heal’s story on Gordon Ramsay’s Botox injections). But it seems Simon is also a fan of more invasive cosmetic surgery as well, convincing a former X-Factor contestant to go under the knife to help make her dreams of stardom come true.

Katrina Lee, 23 underwent thousands of dollars in plastic surgery and beauty treatment procedures after Simon Cowell told her that he wished he could put her voice “in someone else’s body.”

To prepare to audition a second time on a later season of the show, Katrina underwent laser surgery on her face, liposuction, dental work and hired a personal trainer to lose weight, as well as dying her hair an unlikely shade of red before auditioning again. She also developed and fought an eating disorder after hearing Simon’s devastating remarks five years ago.

After Simon’s remarks, Katrina told a British tabloid, “’What happened to me the last time nearly tipped me over the edge, it was terrible.”

‘I came face-to -face with Simon Cowell and told him that his comments had nearly wrecked my life. He told me, ‘That’s not a nice thing I said.’”

Now she reveals that her surgery was a success, as the judges put her through to the next round on her second time on the show.

She says, “’Since then I’ve had laser treatment and liposuction and I’ve come back a new person.”

“When he saw me this time he said I was a good-looking girl. I went through so much after his comments the last time. I was 18 and they really hit me hard.”

“Now I’m delighted. It’s been through a lot, including facial surgery. I’ve gone to every extreme to get to this point.”

‘This year Cheryl Cole said my audition was fantastic and I’m really pleased I’ve come this far.”

Make Me Heal wishes Katrina success on her path to fame, and hopes she has also gained self-esteem along with her plastic surgery.

What Makes Hydrelle an Exiciting New Filler?

Posted on September 24th, 2009 in Fillers & Injectables, Plastic Surgeon Articles & Interviews, Procedures & Breakthroughs by Makemeheal.com Staff

By Shervin Naderi, MD

Although Collagen based fillers such as Zyplast and Cosmoderm had initially dominated the market, they fell out of favor due to their short lasting results and the potential for allergic reactions.

Hydrelle

Over the last five to ten years, we have seen the Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers become the predominant work horse for most Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists. These are used for reduction of nasolabial folds (smile lines), Marionette lines as well as other wrinkles on the face. They are used for cheek enhancement as well as lip plumbing. Tear troughs under the eyes can often be reduced using these fillers. As with any filler, a properly trained and licensed injector with good judgment and technique is the key in success and avoiding complications.

Restylane gained FDA approval first in the United States followed by Juvederm. These two Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers have been the most versatile synthetic dermal fillers in the United States. Other HA fillers such as Hylaform, Captique and Prevelle never became as popular. Allergan plans on introducing a Juvederm with Lidocaine (numbing medicine) pre-mixed, in the near future.

However Hydrelle by Coapt is already here! This is an FDA approved HA filler with a higher concentration of HA molecule and Lidocaine added. The higher concentration of HA molecules mean that 1cc of Hydrelle will give you more HA and volume and wrinkle correction than 1cc of Restylane or Juvederm. The added numbing medicine means that patients who require several shots in the same area for fine contouring will have less pain and more comfort during the procedure.

There is no one great filler. Each patient needs a unique assessment and approach. For those who are happy with Restylane or Juvederm then I would recommend sticking to what you like and what works best for you. But for those who want to try something new, then Hydrelle may be worth a shot!

You can find out more here:

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Mole Makes a Return Appearance for SATC Sequel

Posted on September 24th, 2009 in Celebrity Plastic Surgery by Ruby Marr

Sex and the City fans have been thrilled by the constant behind the scenes glimpses at the upcoming sequel to the film version of the hit TV show. Make Me Heal has noticed that Sarah Jessica Parker’s mole appears to have returned after mysteriously disappearing as a result of plastic surgery?

Sarah Jessica Parker, Plastic Surgery

Last year, Make Me Heal reported when the now 44-year old actress’ mole seemed to disappear. (See Make Me Heal’s story on Sarah Jessica Parker’s mole removal). Now that its back on set, many are scratching their heads as to how it could be back. Our panel of experts has some suggestions.

There are different methods used to remove moles, including shaving. When a mole is shaved, part of it remains on the surface, so it can return. This may be the method used for Sarah Jessica Parker, which would explain why the mole now appears flat rather than raised.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Sherrell J Aston says, “After reviewing photographs of Sarah Jessica Parker it appears that her mole was merely shaved off and not completely removed. It is well known that in many cases shaving the top of a mole is not the answer to eliminating it.”

Plastic surgeon Dr. John Di Saia says, “Maybe she went to a Dermatologist who simply shaved it off. These things are better formally removed as opposed to shaved. If a “root” is left, it can grow.”

Fans of SATC will note that many leaked photos of the upcoming film have been flashbacks of the girls. If SJP had a mole in the past, perhaps make-up was used to draw in the mole for accuracy

Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Walden offers another likely explanation, “It seems like she did have her mole removed from her chin. Her mole was pigmented and raised, while recent photos of her chin show a flat lightly pigmented mole, which may have been drawn on for the new movie they are filming.”

When questioned about the mole’s disappearance, Sarah Jessica reportedly responded, ‘Nothing has been removed.’ Nothing permanently, maybe.

In addition to possibly having her mole removed, for either health or cosmetic reasons, SJP may also have had a nose job in the past (See Make Me Heal’s story on Sarah Jessica Parker’s nose job).

Make Me Heal wishes Sarah Jessica the best of luck as a mom for the second time around and looks forward to seeing what the SATC ladies are cooking up for the sequel.

Charo Stays Sexy with Plastic Surgery

Posted on September 24th, 2009 in Celebrity Plastic Surgery by Lisa Stern

Charo is a Latina performer that has been entertaining audiences for over forty years. But the overtly sensual singer might not have a job anymore if it weren’t for some over the top plastic surgery.

Charo, Plastic Surgery

Reports of Charo’s age place the Spanish sensation at anywhere from 68 to 58. In that time, Charo has managed to stay relevant, thanks to an ample amount of plastic surgery.

Always known for her sexy costumes, Charo has filled them out better than ever in recent years, thanks to an obvious breast augmentation. In addition, she has also gone under the knife above the neck, getting a facelift, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and lip injections.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Sherrell J Aston says, “In my opinion Charo has had a Facelift, Blepharoplasty, Breast Augmentation and Lip Injections. She has worked hard to maintain a provocative appearance.”

Charo likely also uses facial fillers, like Restylane and Juvederm, and chemical peels in between surgeries to keep up appearances. She probably also spends a lot of time eating well and exercising to stay in shape for her flamboyant outfits and onstage costumes.

Charo, born MarĂa Rosario Pilar MartĂnez Molina Moquiere de les Esperades Santa Ana Romanguera y de la Najosa Rasten in Spain, became a staple of American entertainment after making her debut on Laugh-in, a popular television show in the late 1960s.

Most recently, Charo entertained on the 44th annual Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon. She has performed on 22 of the famous Telethons, which raised over $60 million for the cause this year alone.
