Tyra Banks’ Secret Plastic Surgery
Tyra Banks may just be one of the savviest models around, having forged a new career after the runway in talk show television. Tyra recently won a Daytime Emmy award for her television talk show, “The Tyra Banks Show.” On her show, she often dispels rumors and myths not only about women in general, but about herself in particular. In her first season on the air, Tyra Banks dismissed the rumor she had had a breast augmentation, but she has never addressed rumors of a nose job.
Tyra’s large breasts were long speculated to be the results of breast implants. But Tyra proved otherwise in an on-air segment featuring a plastic surgeon. As the audience watched, Tyra removed her bra and let her boobs swing free. Without the bra, Tyra’s breasts fell naturally to her navel. To further illustrate her point that her breasts are indeed real, Tyra then allowed a plastic surgeon to use an ultrasound to detect any foreign material. When he found none, the enthusiastic former model turned talk show host was vindicated.
Tyra frequently disputes tabloid rumors about herself on her show, but she has never mentioned or addressed the rumor that she had a nose job when she was young, presumably to further her modeling career and appear less ethnic.
In a high school photo, Tyra’s nose is wide and round. Her current nose, the nose that made her a household name around the world, is much more narrow and defined along the bridge and significantly less rounded at the tip. Rhinoplasties are common among black women in the public eye (See Make Me Heal’s story on famous black women with plastic surgery) and actress Elise Neal estimates as many as 75% of black women in Hollywood have nose jobs.
Tyra has done a lot to empower black women and we’d like to see her take her honesty one step further and admit to her nose job and whatever other procedures she has in the future.

Beauty is not not universal, every society and community with in that society, and subculture has their own standard of beauty. In a natural world who ever was naturally, truly universally beautiful would be able to exist as they are. Well guess what, this is not a natural world or a perfect world, and if you are trying to gain access and succeed in a society which does not think that you are truly beautiful in your natural state then you have to alter it. Why else do we spend thousands of dollars on student loans? Because we are not equipped for jobs with our own knowledge alone. Tyra may be a lot of things, I’m not a particular avid fan of her but I do appreciate the things that she attempts to do. She confuses and sometimes even enrages me but I am happy to see a woman hold her own in the brutal world of the media. She did what she had to do to get ahead so that she can provide plus size women and women who are “ugly” pretty (her words) with a chance to get in and reach for the stars. This is simply a situation in which Tyra identified the thing that was keeping her from her millions and tackled it. Should she have to? No, but now maybe somebody with the same insecurity as she had does not have to do the same. Thank you Tyra. Race is an issue in America that evokes severe pain in the minds of African-Americans. But keep in mind that it is their history in this country.One can’t ask American descendants of the settles to simply forget the civil war. I don’t think that tyra has had a nose job. She showed how she does her make-up and contouring was part of it. Furthermore, her entire face looks thinner than when she was younger. My face looks different than when I was 17. When the baby fat goes, your features stand out more. I know people who look completely different when they put on their make-up.
I don’t think you can tell by her pictures if she had a nose job, especially when everything is contoured.
To Tamara and others, Yes, if a black person has a nose job it’s rarely to look MORE african. They are usually doing it to look more European, even if they don’t realize it.
They are not going to go in the office and say “Can you make it flatter and wider”? It’s 99.99% racial.
It’s the same with Asians getting the surgery for double eyelids. Not racial? For hundreds of years almond shaped eyes were a sign of beauty, after European colonialism “the rounder the better, and give me some colored contacts”? coincidence?
People aren’t actively saying “golly gee, I sure do want to be white”. But their concept of beauty is warped because European images dominate pop culture.
Remember the experiment with the black and white dolls and the little black girls choosing the white dolls as the beautiful ones? It’s a disgrace!
People do things and don’t realize WHY they do it. Someone told me that they relax their curly afro hair because they prefer the style and it’s more versatile. This doesn’t make sense. If you studying anthropology or sociology you’ll realize that no other hair texture is more versatile that African hair. In some places, you could tell the persons age, tribe , marital status and last name all by their hairstyle. If we were that creative, I’m sure you can think of something besides putting on a wig.

No, it’s not that simple. Ever wonder why old pictures of slaves often wore kerchiefs on their heads? There were actually laws against showing natural Afro hair. The tignon laws in Louisiana passed in 1785, are an example. Bleaching and hair straightening are remnants of those sad days. (it you were lighter and/or had straight hair, you were treated better)
There’s nothing wrong with straightening the hair for a temporary style, or even wearing extensions or weaves (our African ancestors sometimes did but ONLY to add bulk or length to the style and the texture ALWAYS mimicked the natural kinky texture, it was NEVER silky straight like most wigs, weaves and extensions today) but when 95% of blacks do it 100% of the time out of habit, we have to look at the reason.
If we do not know our history, we are doomed to repeat it. I can’t wait for the day when people will love themselves how they are, when the class associations with hair, skin color and racial features have faded away forever. Pretending they don’t still exist won’t help.

Wow, I can’t understand how women of different races can display such anger towards each other when really that anger should be directed at the media/men/etc who impose these impossible standards of beauty. This post was originally created to thank Tyra for empowering black women and to ask her to take her honesty one step further and admit her nose job. But the discussion went through issues between white and black people, often with jealousy and hatred.
If Tyra had a nose job and now feels better, that’s wonderful, it’s her life and her body. She just shouldn’t lie about it so that other people won’t feel bad about not being perfect while this perfection doesn’t in fact exist.
I was also very surprised to read that 75% of black women in Hollywood have nose jobs, I always thought it was natural and I think that it is why so many black women are upset about it: this means setting a standard of beauty that doesn’t reflect reality.
One thing I don’t understand is why it should be a problem when a black person has a nose job and why it doesn’t matter when a white person has one (what happens much more often)? Lots of people have things they don’t like about themselves and if it is such a pain that they decide to have it fixed, well let them do it, that’s their right.
To “keep it real” means to act according to what you feel and stand for your actions.

Tyra is such a hypocrite! She had a talk show about black people using bleaching cream to try to erase their race but I think she bleaches her skin too! If you look at her from when she was in High School to now, she dosen’t even look like the same person! Ever hear of the power of make up. We’ve all seen people made over on shows. Even Tyra’s daytime show as well as ANTM. They take these girls and through the power of hair, make up and clothes they come out looking totally transformed. It’s the same with Tyra. P.S. black people were not the only slaves in history. Does holocaust ring any bells? And for the record, slavery began within the African American race. African Americans sold eachother for MONEY. There were three main reasons a person was enslaved, first: repayment of a debt, second: violation of a law i.e. robber, murder, and third: THE most common way, through war and conquest. Which occured a lot, some hundred years ago. Racism didn’t lead to slavery, but rather slavery lead to racism. European culture developed an ideology to defend slavery that made their culture superior and other cultures, particularly African, inferior. Unbelievable…I accidentally stumbled across this page and decided to read it because I’m bored. I honestly don’t care what kind of plastic surgery Tyra or anyone else has had. That is their business, not mine. I love Tyra but I do agree that she is hypocritical on some issues but can you really think back and say you’ve never been? I have. For the people who are talking about Tyra bleaching her skin, do you guys remember when Beyonce had an issue with a magazine that published her on the front cover had airbrushed her lighter than she was? That could have happened to tyra on many occasions, who knows. But about her being lighter…well I was a very dark child when i was younger, but upon coming here I got lighter brown. I am sad at this discussion (which turned into a useless argument about race blah blah).. I am most ashamed at humanity and by reading all the comments, we have obviously not evolved. However some of the comments do make me feel positive about the future of mankind. I am not perfect, but I know better, out of shear common sense, not to treat anyone how I would not want to be treated.
I would normally think it was pointless to leave a comment, but maybe not so I will anyway. Even some of the people that seem heart felt and neutral about racism, are coming off one sided. I can actually tell after reading half way thru a comment what race you may be or what side your geared more towards. To me it doesn’t matter. Why not state a point, and not judge or put anyone down. Gee z, I used to think Americans were just grateful to live in such a diverse, attempting at least to be a free nation. WOW, no wonder your politicians are invading countries, killing innocents, soo money and power hungry, that your educational structure and Main stream Media, Tv, News as well as your food and water are__Smokes and Mirrors. I am NOT criticizing and I apologize if anyone takes it that way. But it is what it is.
No one can be a good person or ever obtain wisdom, health, happiness if they project negative energy towards anyone in this life.
Hint: Why do you think people get others to do their dirty work for them? Think!
I am not lecturing, preaching or whatever, I am just expressing here.. Tyra is in reality a reflection of ourselves and I don’t know her personally, but I know she is a GOOD SOUL. She has to be to do what she is doing with the shows I have seen about uplifting anyone who is anything from fat, gay, woman, man, alien etc. Her personal decisions were hers whether they were hypocritical or not. She is entitled to change her mind-life-at any time she chooses. I CANNOT and will not criticize anyone but I do understand some of the frustration with the ignorant or lack of knowledge comments. Knowledge is power! Tyra may keep her life a secret and make her own decisions, idc, she is giving back and helping to develop a better world if not help many ‘not so smart’ people see the potential in themselves-feel comfortable about it- and become whatever they desire to be. Self acceptance is the 1st most greatest thing anyone could achieve b/c after that, the possibilities for a confident person is endless. Notice I said confident, not cocky. I am proud of Tyra for the way she responds to people in general. Nothing more or nothing less. Like I said, I don’t know her, however I support many of her opinions and views. Whether she believes her own words or not, if she speaks positive truths, then I got her back.
My goodness, some of you do really sound hateful and insane. Can you imagine what the people in power think of you? This is why there is so much corruption, b/c they are just like this. And what the teacher teaches, the student learns. That is until the student learns the truth. Gee z can we all see here the validity in the statement “Its like the blind leading the blind”? Lets make our representatives accountable for these out of control banks, politicians, corporations, wars, mercury toxin filled vaccines (to dumb the public down so that their receptive to government control), our water (which is being poisoned with fluoride, among other things), our food (which has turned to genetically modified non recognizable by the body JUNK food), the BILLIONS of people being intentionally murdered and starving all over the world, (and this stupid theory our society wants us to adopt that makes it OK to be greedy, and wealthy and ignore the starving and the poor), the cover up with the entire American health care system and credit card banking system (that is strickly run like a business instead of keeping the best interest of the human being and humanity as a whole first), need I go on’ This my people is wrong ALL WRONG. This is what we need people to cherish their elders and not worship youth for nothing. Wisdom comes from education and experience. And not always paid education either.
Okay I have wrote your ears off, I just hope to have made my point and lit up a light bulb somewhere. I really love all people. I have been thru hell yes but who hasn’t? I do not take that out on anyone or anything. I am still a work in progress tho. Aren’t we all? Peace and Love- and not the kind that this world gives!
